Embark on an unforgettable journey through one of Iceland's most breathtaking and lesser-known landscapes—the lush, green geothermal valley nestled near the active Hengill Volcano. This guided hiking tour will immerse you in the raw beauty of Iceland's geothermal wonders, where vibrant greenery meets the power of the Earth's heat.
Tour Highlights:
Vibrant Geothermal Springs:
As you hike through this picturesque valley, you'll pass bubbling hot springs, colorful fumaroles, and steam vents, each a testament to the volcanic activity below. The scent of sulfur fills the air, and the ground beneath you occasionally hums with the rumble of subterranean forces.
Majestic Scenery:
Surrounded by steep mountain slopes and the looming presence of the Hengill Volcano, the landscape feels both serene and powerful. The valley is a rich tapestry of green moss, lush vegetation, and wildflowers that contrast sharply with the blackened lava fields and craggy peaks above.
During the hike, you’ll come across serene natural hot springs, including the thermal river in Reykjadalur. This peaceful spot offers an optional opportunity to unwind and soak in warm, soothing waters before continuing the final stretch of the hiking loop. Surrounded by untouched nature, it’s a perfect way to relax and take in the geothermal beauty of the area.
Breathtaking Views:
As you make your way through the valley, panoramic views unfold at every turn. The vibrant geothermal area contrasts with Iceland's rugged, wild terrain, giving you a sense of the island's unique and untamed beauty. When we reach our highest point of the day,on clear days, you may even catch glimpses of the distant Þingvallavatn Lake or the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Our Signature Snack Break:
As we pause for a snack break during our adventure, we gather around a steaming geothermal hot spring nestled in the rugged landscape. Armed with a basket of fresh eggs, we carefully lower them into the bubbling, mineral-rich water.
While we wait for the eggs to cook, the guide shares fascinating stories about the region's geothermal activity and its importance to the local culture. The sound of bubbling water and the distant hum of nature create a tranquil atmosphere, making it a moment to truly connect with Iceland's raw beauty.
After a few minutes, the eggs are ready. We fish them out, their shells warm to the touch, and crack them open to reveal perfectly boiled centers.
Served on a homemade rye bread, (traditionally baked using geothermal heat), with a spread of butter and slices of freshly smoked trout.
This unique culinary experience is both a delicious treat and a reminder of the incredible power of the earth beneath our feet. Refreshed and re-energized, we continue our journey, carrying the memory of this delightful snack break with us.
Fauna and Flora:
The valley's geothermal heat supports a surprising diversity of plant life, including mosses, grasses, and flowers, creating a verdant, almost tropical environment. Birdlife, including ravens and arctic terns, can often be spotted soaring above the valley, adding to the experience of this otherworldly setting.
